The now-closed traditional Wawa on Route 70 westbound in Cherry Hill.
The days of getting a sugar rush from Rocket Fizz in Marlton are over.
The store's location whose Facebook page indicated it sold thousands of one-of-a-kind candies, bottled soda pops, gag gifts and toys closed in late September after about eight years within Marlton Crossing, owner Joy Nicolosi told 70and73.com.
She blamed the closing on several factors.
"Our rent increase was going to be astronomical," she said. "What you had to pay kids to work there was too high for the little that they do."
In addition, Nicolosi said a $5,000 order of merchandise to stock the store’s shelves cost $1,000 to ship to the store, a price she called "ridiculous" compared to what she paid about a year ago. She also said inflation kept many customers from spending like they used to.
Another recent closing in 70and73.com land was the traditional, store-only Wawa at 1110 Route 70 westbound in Cherry Hill, which closed on October 8 after 51 years at the location.
Wawa spokesperson Alyson Mucha wrote in an email to a 70and73.com reporter that closing it was a "difficult decision to make."
"Over the years, our product offerings and services have changed, and whenever possible, we expand, relocate or modernize our older stores to meet our current offers and standards rather than close them. We have considered options but have determined it is just not feasible for us to do so here," she wrote.
The owner of the Barclay Farm Shopping Center had applied to the Township to open a Super Wawa directly across Route 70, but that location was scrapped in December 2022 after 18 months of heated opposition from neighbors.
