An Asbury Park company that says it is the leading community solar developer in the nation wants to add a total of 10,350 solar panels atop 10 commercial building roofs in the industrial area off Springdale Road in Cherry Hill.

Solar Landscape LLC is scheduled to appear before the Township Zoning Board of Adjustment in a remote Zoom meeting on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for approvals for use variances, site plan waivers and bulk variances for the installations, which would sell power to electricity customers under the state Community Solar Energy Program. More on the meeting here.

The system would "supply renewable energy back into the grid for prospective customers to purchase. The zoning ordinance only permits solar energy systems to provide power for the principal use of the property as opposed to off-site users," according to a review letter from the Township Department of Community Development.

In 2023, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities voted to make the Community Solar Energy Program permanent. Under the program, electricity customers can subscribe to a community solar project and receive discounts on their utility bills, according to information about community solar from the New Jersey Clean Energy program.

Utility bills are expected to increase this month, largely because New Jersey now is an energy importer and must compete with other states in electricity auctions on the regional grid.

Report: Higher NJ electric bills driven by supply fall off, increasing demand of data centers.

Each of the 10 properties is owned by Cherry Umbrella LLC of Radnor, Pennsylvania, according to the applications.

The proposed installations:

  • 1 Keystone Avenue, 1,308 panels
  • 2 Keystone Avenue, 928 panels
  • 1931 Olney Avenue, 844 panels
  • 1939 Olney Avenue, 1,272 panels
  • 2 Pin Oak Lane, 649 panels
  • 2020 Springdale Road, 601 panels
  • 2030 Springdale Road, 1,776 panels
  • 2040 Springdale Road, 850 panels
  • 2050 Springdale Road, 896 panels
  • 2080 Springdale Road, 1,226 panels

"Solar Landscape has deployed more than 400 megawatts of renewable energy projects — totaling over $1 billion in capital investment — and leased 100-plus million square feet of commercial rooftops," according to the company's description on its website.

The company has installations in more than 300 communities in several states, the website notes.
