10192023 LENAPE REGION ESPORTS TEAM

Seneca High School’s esports, or video gaming, team was recognized at the school board meeting for winning a state championship.

Incidents ranging from substance abuse to violence were down nearly 13% in the last school year at the Lenape Regional High School District compared with the year before, the district reported on Wednesday.

In the 2022-2023 year, Lenape had 89 reported incidents involving vandalism, weapons, harassment, intimidation, bullying or substance abuse, Jim Kehoe, the district’s coordinator of security and emergency management, said in a report distributed at Wednesday evening's school board meeting.

That total was down from 102 in the 2021-2022 school year, according to Kehoe's report.

The Lenape Regional district consists of Cherokee, Lenape, Seneca and Shawnee high schools and the Sequoia Alternative Program in Burlington County.

New Jersey school districts are required to record the number of these incidents each year, he stated.

Of the 89 incidents during the 2022-2023 school year:

  • 49 involved substance abuse
  • 30 involved some form of violence
  • four involved weapons
  • four involved harassment, intimidation and bullying
  • two involved vandalism

None of the reported incidents was gang-related, Kehoe reported.

At its meeting, the school board recognized Seneca High School Teacher and firefighter Andy Cunard for organizing a Sept. 11 presentation.

The board also honored 893 district students who are newly registered voters. That total is about 100 more than last year, according to the district.
