Gaetano "Guy" Matro, left, was sworn in as a member of the board of the Pinelands Commission on Friday. Jason T. Stypinski, state deputy attorney general, administered the oath.

A Camden County fourth-generation farmer whose father-in-law in 1979 served as an original member of the New Jersey Pinelands Commission was sworn in as a board member on Friday.

Gaetano "Guy" Matro, who is Camden County's representative on the commission, is a resident of the Elm neighborhood in Winslow Township and owns and operates 800 acres of farmland in Atlantic, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties, according to the Pinelands Commission. Peter J. Burke Jr., his father-in-law, formerly served.

The Commission, an independent state agency, has the mission of protecting the natural, cultural and historical resources of the 938,000-acre state Pinelands Area in seven counties. Board members from the member counties are appointed by the governor.

Matro is a lifelong resident of the Pinelands. His farms produce blueberries, sweet potatoes and soybeans.

His son and nephew are fifth-generation farmers.

Matro, who holds a bachelor's degree in agriculture from Penn State University, is chairman of the Camden County Agriculture Development Board and serves on the Camden County Open Space Advisory Committee.
