Shawn Lichtfuss

On the day after his conviction, a Voorhees man who murdered his wife committed suicide by asphyxia at the Camden County Correctional Facility in Camden, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office reported Wednesday morning.

Shawn Lichtfuss, 53, was convicted by a jury in state Superior Court in Camden on September 18 and, on September 19 at 11:18 p.m. corrections officers found him unresponsive in his cell. Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures and he was pronounced dead at 11:39 p.m., the prosecutor's office reported.

In August 2021, Voorhees Police Department officers responded to a call from someone worried about Lichtfuss and found his wife, Stefanie Caraway, 38, dead in their home on the 1400 block of Lincoln Drive. Lichtfuss later was apprehended at a Voorhees gas station and confessed to killing his wife in a chokehold.

The prosecutor's office, under the supervision of the state Attorney General's Office of Public Integrity and Accountability, is investigating Lichtfuss' suicide as a "death in-custody not involving the use of force."
