For decades, Roland Traynor has played a leading role in Camden County's concert series. But he was not the performer behind the mic nor the entertainer dominating the stage.
Traynor year after year was the guy pulling the concert programs together as a county employee and, on Monday, July 10, Camden's Wiggins Waterfront River Stage — the venue for many of those concerts — will be renamed the Roland Traynor River Stage, according to a Camden County announcement.
"Camden County has benefitted from Roland Traynor's unparalleled dedication over half a century," County Commissioner Jeff Nash, liaison to the Parks Department, said in a statement. "He works tirelessly to bring free, world-class performances right here to our community, letting absolutely nothing stand in his way — not even retirement! This dedication is the least we can do to give him our thanks."
Traynor retired from county employment in 2011, starting as a laborer after serving in the U.S. Army. That job developed into him serving as the architect of the county's free summer concert series, now held at Wiggins, Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, and at Haddon Lake Park in Haddon Heights.
Despite his official retirement, Traynor, who lives in Winslow, was called on as a consultant to help the county pull together its annual concert series.Â
The county stated the stage will be dedicated to Traynor immediately before the scheduled free concert with rhythm and blues singer and percussionist Sheila E. at 8 p.m.
