Bernard A. Platt, of Platt Memorial Chapels in Cherry Hill and a two-time mayor of Cherry Hill Township, will be honored Sunday on his 90th birthday when the section of Haddonfield-Berlin Road that goes by his funeral home will be ceremonially renamed in his honor.
"Bernie is someone I have known for the last 35 years and someone that I know has always been dedicated and committed to making our community a better place," Camden County Commissioner Jeffrey Nash said in a statement on Friday. "Bernie's contributions to Cherry Hill and Camden County are second to none."
Platt was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, moved to Cherry Hill in 1966, and, with his wife, Judy Platt, founded Platt Memorial Chapels in 1977.Â
Platt was mayor of Cherry Hill Township from 1979 to 1980 and from 2002 to 2012.
He was deputy mayor from 1976 to 1979 and served on Township Council from 1977 to 1985. Platt also was a member of the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders (now the Board of Commissioners) from 1996 to 1998.
He is a current member of the board of the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey, past president and board member of the Jewish Geriatric Home (Jewish Senior Housing), co-chairman of the Lions Gate CCRC Planning and Development Committee, and president of the Southern New Jersey B'nai B'rith Housing Corporation, according to the county announcement. He is a past president of Jewish Family and Children's Services, past president of the former Congregation Beth Jacob-Beth Israel, chairman of the Congregation Beth Jacob-Beth Israel Building Committee, executive board member of Israel Bond Organization, and a member of the Board of Jewish Education, Aleph Home Services and the State Board of Jewish Federations.
"During Platt's last term as mayor of Cherry Hill he oversaw the redevelopment of the largest retail and commercial corridor in South Jersey at the former Garden State Racetrack and the Cherry Hill Mall. More than $1 billion of investment was made into the Haddonfield Road corridor of the township and it redefined Cherry Hill as a destination for the future," the announcement noted.
The section of Haddonfield Berlin Road renamed goes from the intersection of Haddonfield Berlin, Evesham and Somerdale roads outside the funeral home to Morris Drive.
