After they were sworn in and had said a few words, new Cherry Hill Township Council members Daniel DiRenzo and Jill Hulnick on Monday evening walked to the Council dais and slipped into the two vacant chairs.
Vacancies were created when former Council President David Fleisher was elected mayor in November and he in turn selected Council member Brian Bauerle to be his full-time chief of staff.
DiRenzo fills the Bauerle opening. Other nominations from the Cherry Hill Democratic Commitee were Ted Kail and Lorraine Maitland. Hulnick takes Fleisher's spot. Other nominations from the committee were Gerry Greene and Anna Postiloff.
"DiRenzo is a long-time resident of Cherry Hill," Council member Carole Roskoph said in nominating the member of the Zoning Board of Adjustment for the Council role. "He epitomizes everything that Cherry Hill stands for and all that we are good as a community," she said of the resident of the Erlton South neighborhood.
DiRenzo grew up in the Locustwood neighborhood and has been a captain in the Fire Department and retired as a student support supervisor after working with Cherry Hill West High School students for about 10 years.
"I will always put the people of Cherry Hill first," he said in his acceptance speech.
New member Hulnick, who lives in the Willowdale neighborhood, was nominated by member Sangeeta Doshi, who noted Hulnick's volunteer work in the community.
The nomination was seconded by member Michele Golkow, who said of Hulnick: "She does so much good for this community. She is so thoughtful, so responsive and so caring."
Hulnick was second in command as chief impact officer for nonprofit BBYO, a national organization devoted to the Jewish teen movement. Before that, she served for two years as assistant deputy commissioner in the New Jersey Department of Education.
"I'm confident that they will represent the people of Cherry Hill well," Mayor Fleisher said after the votes.
The two positions filled Monday night are short term. The Bauerle position now filled by DiRenzo was to expire on December 31, 2027. The Fleisher position was to expire on December 31, 2025. The November general election this year will determine who will fill the two seats until the terms expire.
