Cherry Hill, Evesham/Marlton, Medford, Medford Lakes, Moorestown, Mount Laurel, Voorhees and elsewhere near the iconic state highways of Routes 70 and 73.
Editor Neill Borowski and 70and73.com won the first-place digital news award for best continuing coverage at the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists 2022 Excellence in Journalism Awards Ceremony on Saturday.
The state chapter of the national journalism organization recognized Borowski for his series of articles on the expansion of Super Wawa stores in the 70and73.com region.
70and73.com — a 3-year-old digital news site that primarily covers Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Evesham, Mount Laurel, Moorestown, Medford and Medford Lakes — won in the Garden State Division, for news outlets in New Jersey.
Borowski, who owns the site and lives in Evesham, spent 21 years at The Philadelphia Inquirer and was executive editor or senior editor in several newsrooms across the country, including The Press of Atlantic City.
"The goal for this contest is to highlight the best in journalism within New Jersey, and the best journalism about the Garden State," P. Kenneth Burns, NJ-SPJ president and co-chair of this year's contest said in the awards announcement. "I am proud that our contest highlighted great journalists and provided a platform for outlets to compete against each other in a professional, friendly competition."
Since its inception, 70and73.com has followed the rollout of Super Wawas in South Jersey and the deep opposition to them from some residents.
"Many issues in our suburbs deal with the perceived quality of life," Borowski said.
"Residents have been clear that continuing commercial development and problems of traffic, clear-cutting trees and the disappearance of green space are extremely important to them," he said. "We endeavor to disclose those plans before decisions are made by municipal officials."
