The month of August was a bittersweet one for John Kyrtatas of Marlton.
That is because SweetWater Bar and Grill, the 40-year-old restaurant he co-owned with his brother, George Kyrtatas of Medford, and his parents, Angelo Kyrtatas and Antonia Kyrtatas of Cinnaminson, closed permanently on August 24.
"The town has changed. The industry has changed. Everything's changed, and that's why we decided to change. It is time to try new things,” John said in an interview with 70and73.com two days before the American cuisine restaurant closed its doors. The restaurant and its lot at 10 Route 130 in Cinnaminson are for sale. Neither he nor the real estate company trying to sell it disclosed the asking price.
John said he began working at the establishment about 30 years ago when his parents made him peel potatoes and wash dishes. Perhaps for that reason, John said after making the decision to close, his thoughts turned to his employees.
"We wanted to give our staff two weeks notice," he said. "We wanted to give everybody that works here the opportunity to look around (for another job)."
John said that George will teach culinary arts at the Burlington County Institute of Technology. As for his plans, John said he was still working out the details of his next professional adventure and declined to discuss them.
But, he added, one thing was certain: "South Jersey is my home, and that is where I am staying."
