10242022 VOO CAR WASH

The entrance and exit driveways for the car wash would be on Route 73.

A company that says it is the world's largest local car wash chain is scheduled to appear before the Voorhees zoning board on Thursday with plans to build a car wash on heavily wooded land at southbound Route 73 and Dutchtown Road.

Applicant Boing US Holdco Inc. of Charlotte, North Carolina, a subsidiary of publicly traded Driven Brands Holdings Inc., states it operates local car washes at more than 900 locations in 14 countries, including more than 300 in the United States. The Voorhees operation would be a Take 5 Car Wash.

Driven Brands is the largest automotive services company in North America, featuring brands such as Meineke auto repair, MAACO collision repair and auto painting and CARSTAR collision repair, according to the company's filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. The agenda is here.

The proposal for a car wash in Voorhees requires approvals for preliminary- and final-site plans and a use variance because car washes are not permitted in the zone, according to a review letter from zoning board engineer and planner CME Associates of Howell, Monmouth County.

Boing US Holdco also proposes to clear trees from 1.7 of the nearly two-acre property, which is owned by Medical Properties Route 73 LLC, according to its plans. The plan estimates that 935 trees, from five inches to three feet in diameter, would be cut down.

CME Associates stated in its review letter that regulations say 70% of the vegetation may be cleared for construction, but the applicant is proposing to clear more than 85%. It also seeks a design waiver allowing it to plant 64 new trees where 91 are required and 119 shrubs where 200 are required, according to CME Associates.

Since at least 1930, the site at 121 Route 73 has remained vacant, undeveloped and forested land, according to a report for the developer by Pennoni Associates Inc. of Haddon Heights.

The entrance and exit driveways to the car wash would be on Route 73. Plans show three payment lanes with kiosks and 23 cars queued in the entrance lanes and driveway.

"The proposed car wash will not result in a significant increase in traffic," according to a Pennoni Associates traffic study.

Take 5 Car Wash would have a 125-foot wash tunnel and 17 parking spots for vacuuming.
