Although there are no immediate plans to expand, the nonprofit Animal Welfare Association has purchased five wooded acres next to its Voorhees building "to protect the environment around our shelter and to plan wisely for the future," the AWA reported.
Construction on Centennial Boulevard has been active in recent years and more apartment building is in the works.
"We're excited to begin envisioning how this space can support the long-term goals of our organization," AWA Executive Director Laura Houston said in a statement. "This land represents more than just open space. It’s an investment in the well-being of our animals, our team, and the broader community we serve."
The private association, which does not receive government funding, says it is "the oldest and largest low-cost pet clinic, adoption center, and no-kill animal shelter in South Jersey."
Walking trails, for people and pets and residents, may be added to the property, the AWA, based at 509 Centennial Boulevard, reported.
