Mount Laurel's new mayor, Stephen Steglik, with Silvia Catalan-Culnan, the new deputy mayor. Each is a member of Township Council.Â
For the third time, Stephen Steglik on Monday evening was elected by his fellow Township Board members as mayor of Mount Laurel. He formerly served as mayor in 2021 and 2023.
His elected deputy, Silvia Catalan-Culnan, who immigrated from Colombia to the United States, was the first Latina Council member and now is the first Latina deputy mayor in Mount Laurel.
The courtroom in the municipal building was packed for the Council reorganization meeting with visiting politicians, friends and family members, local business leaders and vendors.
Being named deputy mayor is an "American dream for me," Catalan-Culnan said after she was elected by the Council. She works as legislative director for Assemblyman William Spearman, who attended her election and swearing in.
The Council rotates the mayor and deputy position annually. The 2025 mayor was Council member Nikitas "Nick" Moustakas.
Steglik, who works full time as the Voorhees township administrator, was the youngest mayor in Mount Laurel history when he was first elected by Council in 2021. Several public officials from Voorhees attended the Mount Laurel meeting, including Mayor Michael R. Mignogna.
Steglik thanked Council members for their "faith and trust" in him, noting that it "humbles me greatly."
