Democrats win three seats on Mount Laurel Township Council; two incumbents running were reelected.

Two incumbents and a newcomer — all Democrats — were elected to Mount Laurel Township Council on Tuesday, according to unofficial Burlington County election results.

Nikitas Moustakas, the member of Council who now serves as deputy mayor, received the greatest number of votes. He got 13,244, or 19.86% of the total.

Not far behind, in second place, was newcomer Silvia Catalan-Culnan with 13,121 votes, or 19.67% of the total.

Fozia Janjua, the member of Council who now serves as mayor, received 13,017 votes, or 19.52% of the total.

Moustakas, a first-generation immigrant from Greece, is the founding member and managing partner of Moustakas Nelson LLC, a law firm in Haddonfield, according to the Township website. 

Janjua, a first-generation Pakistani American and the first Muslim and South Asian woman selected as mayor, is a first-grade teacher at Westfield Friends School.

The three Democrats got 59% of the 66,694 votes cast and the three Republican challengers got 41%, according to the county statistics.
