Historical one-mile run: Toss that chicken as you jog by in Moorestown this Saturday.

Maybe you're a veteran of fund-raising runs. But it's a safe bet your previous runs didn't include rubber chickens, potatoes or carrots.

The Moorestown Historical Society and Moorestown250 this Saturday, September 27, is sponsoring a combination one-mile run/walk/reverse scavenger hunt through the center of Moorestown inspired by the Hessian retreat from Moorestown during the Revolutionary War.

The Hessian Retreat One-Mile Fun Run "reimagines a harrowing day during the Revolutionary War when 7,700 Hessian soldiers retreating along the Kings Highway through the tiny village of Moore's Town ransacked it! They stole food stores and livestock," according to the organizers.

Participants get a knapsack with items to return to five homes along the way. The finish line and post-race celebration will be at Moorestown Friends School.

The entry fee of $35 includes T-shirt, knapsack preloaded with items to be "returned" to Revolutionary Witness Houses including vegetables, rubber chicken and wooden coin.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday at the Perkins Center for the Arts at 395 Kings Highway in Moorestown. The event begins at 9 a.m.
