The late singer Christina Grimmie, a Marlton native who attended Cherokee High School, would be recognized with a day of her own on June 10 — the 10th anniversary of her murder — under bipartisan state legislation proposed by Senators Latham Tiver and Troy Singleton.
"Christina Grimmie Day" would honor the singer and songwriter who was 22 in 2016 when she was shot to death in Orlando, Florida while signing autographs after a concert.
After her death, Grimmie's family established the Christina Grimmie Foundation to support those who have lost loved ones to gun violence. The legislation also requests that Gov. Mikie Sherrill issue a proclamation formally recognizing the day, and calls for continued awareness of efforts to support victims of unexpected tragedies and their families.
"Christina Grimmie was one of our own — a South Jersey kid who loved music and shared that gift with the world," said Tiver, the Republican who represents parts of Burlington and Atlantic counties. "Designating June 10 as Christina Grimmie Day is a small but meaningful way to make sure New Jersey never forgets her."
Grimmie built an early following by sharing original music on YouTube — eventually earning hundreds of millions of views and nearly 3.5 million subscribers — before finishing in the top three on Season 6 of NBC's The Voice. Her debut EP, Find Me, reached No. 2 on iTunes. She performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dancing with the Stars, and stages across the country.
