The first segment of the Burlington County Rancocas Creek Greenway Trail, shown here, was completed in 2022 and crosses four miles through Delran, Riverside and Delanco.

Ambitious plans for paved trails for walkers, runners and bicyclists through Burlington and Camden counties continue to roll out, with an ultimate possibility of connecting trail systems in the two counties.

Burlington County commissioners last week approved applying to the state for $6 million in funding that would add a four-mile trail leg connecting Historic Smithville Park in Eastampton with the Pemberton Rail Trail, according to a county announcement.

That new trail section would cross through parts of Eastampton, Pemberton Township and Pemberton Borough as part of the Rancocas Creek Greenway Trail, which would be 30 miles long and include a pedestrian and bicycle-safe crossing on Route 206.

"This project will improve mobility, enhance one of our most popular county parks and dramatically improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists," Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson said in a statement.

At the same time, Camden County is developing a 34-mile Camden County Link trail from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Camden to the Gloucester County border in Winslow Township.

In October, Burlington County commissioned a Southern Regional Trails Study to study building 50 miles of new trails through towns that include Evesham, Mount Laurel, Medford, Moorestown, Maple Shade, Tabernacle and Shamong.

The study "will also investigate possible connections to trails already built or in development in local towns and neighboring Camden County," the county announced at the time.

A four-mile section of Burlington County's Rancocas Creek Greenway project opened in 2022 and was the first part of the Greenway project to be completed. It travels through Delran, Riverside and Pennington Park in Delanco.

The county is working on a two-mile leg from Pennington Park in Delanco across Route 130 to Willingboro and Rainbow Meadow Park in Delran.

"Plans call for construction of fully accessible paths linking all three parks, a safe pedestrian/bicycle crossing across Route 130 between milepost 40 and 42 in Edgewater Park, plus improvements to the Route 130 Bridge across the Rancocas Creek to better accommodate pedestrians and cyclists," the county announced in November.
