Carol L. Birnbohm

After 13 years of leading the Lenape Regional High School District, Carol L. Birnbohm will retire on September 1, according to a Thursday afternoon announcement from the district.

The retirement was approved at the district's Wednesday Board of Education meeting. Lenape has begun a search for a new superintendent, with a May 31 deadline to submit an application.

In a letter to the Lenape staff, Birnbohm said her role in the district "has been a constant source of pride as I have watched generations of students and staff grow, learn and achieve remarkable things." Among those students are her three children – Kaitlyn, Jenna and Dylan - who are graduates of Seneca High School.

"Carol is a superintendent's superintendent — an esteemed leader whose wisdom and expertise have been sought by highly accomplished peers," LRHSD Board President Charles D. Roseboro said in a statement. "Through her strategic vision, exceptional daily management of the district, and remarkable ability to build a strong leadership team, Carol has made a lasting impact on the LRHSD."

Birnbohm, who is a Cherokee High School graduate and will speak at the school's graduation on June 17, became superintendent in 2012 and, before that, had served as assistant superintendent since 2007.

She joined the Cherokee faculty in 1992 and taught math, coached varsity lacrosse and swimming and served as assistant field hockey coach. In 1998, she was named New Jersey Lacrosse Coach of the Year.

The district leader was promoted to assistant principal and supervisor of mathematics and guidance at Cherokee in 2001. In 2004, she was promoted to the district director of programs and planning.
