Responding to what is touted as the fastest growing sport in the nation, local governments have been building pickleball courts to meet the demand for the paddle sport viewed as lower impact on the body than playing tennis.
Camden County on Thursday announced that it would add four new pickleball courts with lighting to John Adler Memorial Park at Challenge Grove in Cherry Hill on Bortons Mill Road. The parking lot will be upgraded and benches will be added for the courts, which will be built to the northwest of the baseball diamond, according to county plans.
At the same time, Cherry Hill Township announced it would build four lighted pickleball courts on empty land at Beechwood Avenue and Route 38. "Beechwood Park" is the site of the former Hinchman School, which was shut down in the late 1980s.
The Beechwood pickleball complex will include parking, fencing, benches and added shade trees and will be complete by early fall this year, according to the Township announcement.
"Pickleball is a vastly popular sport for all ages, and with the construction of eight more courts...I am excited to add to our outstanding recreational facilities and open spaces," Cherry Hill Mayor David Fleisher said in a statement. "Our residents spoke, and we listened," he added.
"While many have associated the sport with a higher age participation, the age group with the most participants, 2.3 million people, is actually the 25–34 age range. The sport added over 1 million children under the age of 18 from 2022 to 2023," according to a 2024 report by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) and Pickleheads.Â
USA Pickleball, the nonprofit governing body for the sport, reported that more than 2,300 locations were added in 2025, bringing the total to 18,258 in the nation.
